BUILDING BUILDINGS THAT BUILD THEMSELVES
For an artsy kid growing up in an oppressive suburban world of wealth, whiteness, and religion, good friends with open minds were all-important. Back then, I found a few friends who I hope will always keep in touch. All of them were little beacons of reason and goodness on the foggy adolescent sea. Today, I'm proud my old crew -- they've bravely followed their interests and gone on to do some very interesting things: one's a talented architect in the Midwest, another is a Shaolin Kung Fu practitioner / math teacher in NYC, and then there's Build Buildings (aka Ben). Ben's in med school, which is gnarly enough, but in his fleeting free time he manages to put out truly excellent musical albums. In fact, his newest (and my favorite), Ceiling Lights from Street, is only just available. His music has been in several primo climbing movies, including several of the Dose films, by BigUp Productions. One of his tracks even made it onto NBC's Jeep World of Adventure Sports. Anyway, that's all background. Go to the website and listen for yourself -- some very wonderful stuff is going on in these tracks. Personally, I like to switch on this album while I work at my computer. The spacial, minimal glitch makes the often-mundane "real" world just a little bit more like the world I see in my dreams.
